In the late 1990s, child welfare jurisdictions in United States and other countries began to implement an alternative approach allow for a more flexible response differing needs circumstance of families reported protective services (CPS). This structuring is commonly referred as differential (DR); it also called (AR), family assessment (FAR), multiple (MR), or dual track. Currently, thirty-two states have legislation enact pilot-test DR approach. not practice model but rather policy orientation that focuses on broadly assessing family’s situation identify underlying issues. consists reforms intended provide involved with system concrete supports needed safe environment their children. DR, accepted reports (i.e., CPS meet legal definition abuse neglect) are assigned either investigation (IR) response, depending type allegation factors such safety concerns, risks, prior neglect, victim’s age relationship alleged perpetrator, domestic violence, substance use. The IR involves forensic gather evidence formally determine whether incident neglect occurred, defined by state law. Cases AR generally low- moderate-risk cases, With social workers conduct comprehensive work families’ supports. addition, cases do require formal determination names perpetrators entered into central registry. track assignment can change if new information discovered changes, necessitating IR.
